If you’ve noticed that your horse is frequently shaking its head, it is likely that your horse has an irregularity in its ears. Aside from infection, the most common ear issue for horses is ear mites. In addition to head shaking, common ear mite symptoms include unusual sensitivity to touch, constant need to scratch ears against hard surfaces, ear swelling, and an excess of ear wax.
Unfortunately, it is quite common for a horse to discover crawly intruders in its ears. And, while ear mites are not dangerous, they can be extremely painful. In addition to discomfort, ear problems can greatly compromise a horse’s coordination, and if not treated proactively, can lead to deafness.
How to Care for a Horse with Ear Mites:
First, keep in mind that your horse is quite uncomfortable and is likely a little scared. Ears are highly sensitive areas for horses, and ear problems can be quite disorienting. So, try to calm your horse down by petting it, surrounding it with favorite blankets, or offer it a treat, etc. Using a slow relaxed voice, assure your horse that it will be alright. Although your horse will not understand what you are saying, they’ll perceive your soothing tone and emotion.
Always clean your hands thoroughly before handling your horse’s ears. Hold the horse's ear at the base in order to keep your horse’s head still and give you better access. Squeeze 1-2 dropperfuls of Aardora into each ear and then pinch the ear closed at the base. By releasing your grip on your horse’s ear, he or she will wriggle a bit, allowing the ear drop formula to slide into the horse’s ear.
Aardora Ear Care Drops are formulated with cedarwood oil to naturally repel mites, ticks and insects from your horse’s ears. Additionally, Aardora contains jojoba oil to soothe your horse’s irritation to make it more comfortable during the healing process.
