How to Care for a Cow with Dry or Flaky Teats and Udders:
If you raise dairy cows in an area that experiences cold or very windy weather, you’ve probably experienced the issue of chapped or cracked teats. Similar to the seasonal skin dryness that humans experience (dry hands, chapped lips, etc.), there are seasonal side effects for cows. In harsh weather, the natural oils in their skin are depleted, giving way to tiny skin cracks and reddish chapped irritation. Most owners comment that cows with white or pink teats are more susceptible to this skin problem.
To minimize continued irritation, cows experiencing cracked teats will kick their calves and try to keep them away from this sensitive area.
To relieve your cow’s discomfort, itch or inflammation, use a fast-acting and soothing topical cream. A topical (surface) skin protectant, such as Aardora, will also lower the risk of infection for dry udder skin, particularly if the area is extremely irritated and raw. And, of course, treating your cow with an extra dose of TLC (tender loving care) will help him or her to heal more comfortably.
